How Much Wet Food to Feed a Cat

Everything runs on this page — nothing you type is uploaded. The daily-calorie math follows the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines (itself citing the National Research Council's Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats); the grams-and-cans conversion is ordinary arithmetic on whatever kcal number you enter from your own food's label. This isn't a substitute for your vet's advice, especially for a cat with a health condition or a weight to lose — it's a calculator, not a diagnosis, and nobody has reviewed it as veterinary advice.
How the numbers work
The formula behind the calculator
Same source as the tool above — AAHA/AAFP's 2021 Feline Life Stage Guidelines, citing the NRC's 2006 energy-requirement research.
| Life stage | Daily energy need |
|---|---|
| Kitten (10 wk – 10 mo) | 200 kcal/kg/day tapering to 80 kcal/kg/day |
| Young adult, 1–6y | RER × 1, where RER = 30 × kg + 70 |
| Mature adult, 7–10y | ≈ RER, individually adjusted |
| Senior, 11y+ | RER × 1.10–1.25 |
RER stands for resting energy requirement — what a cat burns lying still. "DER," the number the calculator shows, is RER adjusted for life stage. Neuter status, breed, and how active a specific cat is can all move the real number up or down; treat the result as a starting point to weigh and adjust from, not a fixed prescription.
Weight, age, or body condition
Don't know your cat's exact age — or whether the portion is even headed the right way?
The feeding calculator above needs a life stage, not a birth date. And a portion only helps if the weight behind it is a healthy one to begin with.
FAQ
Feeding amounts, answered
It depends on your cat's weight, life stage, and the calories in your specific can — there's no single number that fits every cat or every food. A healthy adult cat's daily energy need works out to roughly 30 × bodyweight in kg + 70 kcal (the AAHA/AAFP resting energy formula); divide that by the kcal printed on your can's label to get the count. The calculator above does that division for you and splits it across your feedings.
