Everything runs on this page — nothing you type is uploaded. Adult-cat calories follow WSAVA's published calorie-needs chart, citing the National Research Council's 2006 energy-requirement research; kitten and senior numbers reuse the same 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines as our feeding calculator, so the two tools never disagree about the same cat. This isn't a substitute for your vet's advice, especially for a cat with a health condition or weight to lose — nobody has reviewed it as veterinary advice.
How the numbers work
WSAVA's own calorie-needs chart
The table WSAVA publishes for a healthy adult cat in ideal body condition — the calculator above runs the same two formulas at your cat's exact weight.
| Weight | Kilocalories/day |
|---|---|
| 2.2 lb (1.0 kg) | 100–130 |
| 4.4 lb (2.0 kg) | 160–170 |
| 6.6 lb (3.0 kg) | 200–210 |
| 8.8 lb (4.0 kg) | 225–250 |
| 11.0 lb (5.0 kg) | 250–290 |
| 13.2 lb (6.0 kg) | 265–330 |
| 15.4 lb (7.0 kg) | 280–370 |
WSAVA names the two formulas behind that range: a "Lean Adult" cat needs 100 kcal × weight(kg)0.67 per day, while an "Obese-prone Adult" needs 130 kcal × weight(kg)0.4. Neuter status and activity level decide which formula — or the midpoint between them — the calculator applies to your cat. WSAVA prints this chart up to 7.0 kg (15.4 lb); above that it's the same formula extrapolated, which the calculator flags rather than hiding.
Weight or age calculator
Don't know your cat's exact age — or whether this number is even the right goal?
The calculator above needs a life stage, not a birth date. And a calorie target only matters if the weight behind it is a healthy one to begin with.
FAQ
Cat calories, answered
It depends on weight, life stage, neuter status, and activity — WSAVA's own published chart shows a healthy 4.5 kg (9.9 lb) adult cat needing anywhere from 240 to 270 kcal/day, and that range widens further once you add a kitten's growth needs or a senior's slower metabolism. The calculator above runs WSAVA's and AAHA/AAFP's formulas on your cat's numbers instead of pointing you at one generic figure.
