Will your cat answer to it?

Cats can tell their own name apart from similar-sounding words, per Saito et al., Scientific Reports (2019). Short names that end in a vowel — marked Easy to call — are, by observation, often simpler to pick out of background chatter. Hit Say it and try it in the voice you'd actually use.

White cat names

Why white cat names cluster around snow and soft food

Two themes run through the 131 white-tagged names above: cold-weather imagery (Snowball, Snowy, Frosty, Blizzard, Alpine, Powder, Winter, Snowflake) and pale, soft food (Marshmallow, Cotton, Vanilla, Milk, Coconut, Rice, Meringue). A third theme simply says "white" in another language — Blanche, Bianca, Neige ("snow" in French), Xue ("snow" in Mandarin), and Gwen, from the Welsh for "white" or "fair." Cross-filter white with the Japanese style and 17 names come back: Shiro means "white" directly, Hikari means "light," Shinju means "pearl," and Usagi means "rabbit," which also happens to be Sailor Moon's civilian name, Usagi Tsukino.

A true solid-white coat comes from a single dominant gene that masks every other color a cat's genetics would otherwise produce — it isn't albinism, and most white cats keep normal eye color rather than the pink or pale eyes albinism causes. That same masking gene is also linked to a documented, higher-than-average rate of congenital deafness in white cats, especially ones with blue rather than gold or green eyes. It's not universal, and it's not a reason to skip a white cat — just something a vet visit in the first week after adoption is worth checking for, the same way any new cat gets a first checkup regardless of coat.

Girl names for a white cat

61 of the 131 white-tagged names carry a girl tag — Pearl, Cotton, Vanilla, Winter, Dove, Opal, Snowdrop, Magnolia, Duchess, Marie, and Artemis among them. Duchess and Marie both come from Disney's 1970 film The Aristocats; Artemis doubles as the white guardian cat in Sailor Moon and the Greek goddess of the hunt, a double meaning that also shows up with Diana on the grey-cat page.

Boy names for a white cat

20 carry a boy tag outright — Blizzard, Yeti, Shiro, Albus (Latin for "white," and Dumbledore's first name), Muta, the big white cat of Studio Ghibli's The Cat Returns, and Haku, shared with the river spirit who turns into a white dragon in Spirited Away. Another 50 are tagged unisex, so Snowy, Cloud, Powder, and Chalk all work regardless of the cat's sex.

Test the name before you commit

Say the shortlisted name twice, fast, the way you'd call a cat in from the yard — then again from across the room at a normal volume, not a coo. If it still sounds natural on the second try, it passes. Two-syllable names with a hard consonant tend to carry outdoors better than soft, drawn-out ones.

A few mistakes show up again and again: names that collapse into "no" when shouted (Bo, Jo), multi-part names that are exhausting to yell from a porch, and names that are too close to another pet's in the house. Dodge those early and the name holds up for years, not just the first excited week.

FAQ

White cat names, answered

No. White cats as a group have a documented, higher-than-average rate of congenital deafness — most pronounced in blue-eyed white cats specifically — but it isn't universal. A vet can check hearing at a first checkup, which is worth doing for any newly adopted cat regardless of coat.
